On United Way of Central New York’s Day of Caring, thousands of volunteers will show up for CNY nonprofits by rolling up their sleeves to paint walls, clean parks, build garden beds, and more. But the work doesn’t stop when the gloves come off.

A freshly painted youth center needs funded programs. A new community garden needs food access initiatives. A reorganized pantry needs shelves stocked year-round.

Across the country, and right here in Central New York, fundraising is down. For five consecutive years, the number of people donating to nonprofits has declined. Today, more people are struggling to make ends meet, and nonprofits – including United Way – are challenged to do more with less.
