United Way works with other funders and non-profits to facilitate initiatives that tackle our community’s most complex issues. These initiatives range from supporting early childhood success to workforce development and building financial skills, all aimed at strengthening our community and cultivating collaborations.
The Book Buddies program connects volunteers with students in grades K-3 in the Syracuse City School District. Volunteers commit to one hour a week, for the school year, working each week with the same students in 30-minute blocks. Through Book Buddies, kids get to enjoy reading at their own pace and the extra practice they need to improve their reading skills.

Supports community initiatives that raise literacy levels across the lifespan in Onondaga County, such as the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides free books for children in Onondaga County from birth to age five
Creates shared prosperity in Central New York by creating career opportunities for individuals who are unemployed and underemployed, while helping companies build stronger workforces.
The Housing and Homeless Coalition of Central New York (HHC) serves as the community coalition to address homelessness and housing vulnerability by connecting service providers and developing strategies to prevent and reduce homelessness.
CA$H (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) Coalition of Onondaga County organizes the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program to help individuals complete their tax returns free of charge, and shares resources to improve financial literacy and stability.
Offers free services to all residents in and around the city of Syracuse, providing professional, one-to-one financial counseling.
